Sunrise Super Squeezies Omega-3 DHA Tubes. If you haven't heard of them, they're basically a soy pudding snack in a long plastic package. Aimed at children with brightly coloured packaging sporting cartoon kids, these snacks are a solution to the age-old issue of packing school lunches. The issue of needing spoons to eat with, more specifically. The Squeezies, as their name suggests, can just be squished into your mouth like a freezie: no cutlery required.
The downside of the no-spoon-required convenience is potentially more garbage. In general, I'm not a fan of individually packaged foods--particularly packaging that isn't accepted by municipal recycling programs--because of the contribution to landfills & plastic pollution when it escapes into the ocean. This is my only real complaint about the Super Squeezies--you can't recycle the packaging with your #1, #2, #4, #5 plastics, cans, paper & glass in Vancouver.
The ingredients are all recognizable to people without a chemistry degree & the list isn't too long. Make no mistake: it is a processed convenience food, but it's a better option than many others out there. They do have some added sugar, 7-8g a serving, depending on the flavour. That's the equivalent of about two sugar cubes, for frame of reference. Families with allergies (except for soy, of course) will love these desserts: Super Squeezies are made without preservatives, dairy, peanuts, gluten or artificial colours & flavours. I appreciate the fact that Sunrise uses non-GMO soy & corn ingredients & has since 1999.
Probably the most important question is: how do they taste? I tried a chocolate fudge Squeezie first off, & while I have to admit it was a bit odd to be extruding pudding into my mouth out of a plastic bag, I found it tasty. I think kids would probably think squishing pudding out of a tube was a brilliant idea. When I gave a Squeezie to my two-year-old, he did okay with some help, but got a fair bit of it all over himself on his first try.
Sunrise Super Squeezies Omega-3 DHA Tubes come in boxes of eight tubes of 60g each, four chocolate fudge & four strawberry banana flavour. You can pick them up for about $4 at most major supermarkets.
